Why we build on Astro — explained for business owners

You shouldn’t have to think about what your website is built with. But the choice affects things you do care about: how fast it loads, how often it breaks, what it costs to run and how well it ranks.

Here’s why we build every site on Astro, without the jargon, and what it means for you as the person paying for the website and relying on it to bring in work.

What Astro actually is

Astro is an open-source tool that web developers use to build websites. It isn’t a website builder you log into, like Squarespace or Wix, and it isn’t a content management system with a dashboard, like WordPress. It’s closer to a very efficient workshop where your site is made before anyone visits it.

When we finish building your site, Astro turns every page into a complete, ready-to-send file. When someone opens your home page, the server doesn’t need to assemble it from a database, run plugins or fetch settings. It simply hands over the finished page.

That sounds like a small technical detail, but it changes almost everything about how your site performs day to day.

Most websites send too much

Many small-business websites run on platforms that load large amounts of code on every page, for sliders, pop-ups, page builders and plugins, whether the page needs them or not. On a phone with patchy reception, that means waiting.

It usually happens gradually. A theme is chosen because it looks good in the demo, and it comes with features you never use. A plugin is added for a contact form, another for a gallery, another for reviews, and each one adds its own code to every page. A few years later, a simple page about your services is carrying the weight of a dozen tools.

Astro takes the opposite approach. It builds each page ahead of time as a simple, finished page and sends only what that page needs. A page of text and images arrives as text and images. If one page needs something interactive, such as a booking widget or a map, only that page loads the extra code.

What that means for you

It’s fast. Our sites score 95 or more on Google’s Lighthouse performance test on mobile before we hand them over. Fast pages keep visitors, and page experience is part of how Google evaluates sites. You can check how your current site measures up with our free speed test.

There’s less to break. You won’t have plugin updates to apply every week, there’s no database for someone to break into, and there’s no theme waiting to fall over when something else updates. A finished page has very few moving parts, so there’s very little that can go wrong with it.

It’s cheaper to run. Pre-built pages can be served from a global network for a fraction of the cost of traditional hosting, and that network also means your site loads quickly for visitors wherever they are.

It’s portable. Astro is open source and your site is standard code that any competent developer can work on. If you ever move on, our Transfer service hands the whole site over.

How speed and security affect your enquiries

It’s worth being clear about why any of this matters to a service business.

Most people find a tradesperson, accountant, physio or lawyer on their phone, often while they’re doing something else. If your page is slow to appear, some of them will tap back and choose the next result. You never see those lost visitors, because they never reach your contact form.

Security works the same way. Most small-business sites that get hacked aren’t targeted personally; they’re caught by automated tools scanning the internet for outdated plugins. A site made of finished pages with no plugins and no login screen gives those tools very little to find. That means fewer nasty surprises, such as your site suddenly redirecting visitors elsewhere or being flagged as unsafe by browsers.

There’s also a search benefit. Google needs to read your pages to rank them, and clean, fast, well-structured pages are easy to read. Speed alone won’t lift you to the top of the results, because content and reputation matter more, but a slow, bloated site makes everything else harder. Our SEO page explains what we set up on every build to give your pages a strong start.

How it compares with Squarespace, Wix and WordPress

Each platform has its place, and it’s worth understanding the trade-offs.

Squarespace and Wix are designed so you can build a site yourself. That’s genuinely useful if you have the time and enjoy it. The cost is that every site on those platforms carries the platform’s own code, so there’s a limit to how fast and lean your pages can be, and you’re tied to their hosting for as long as you use them.

WordPress powers a huge share of the web and can do almost anything, but that flexibility is exactly what makes it heavy. A typical small-business WordPress site relies on a theme and a collection of plugins, each updated on its own schedule by different developers. Keeping them all working together is an ongoing job.

Astro gives you a custom-built site without that overhead. You don’t edit it through a drag-and-drop editor, but you also don’t have to maintain one. If you’re weighing up the options, our guide to choosing between Squarespace, Wix or a custom website goes into more detail.

Can I still edit it myself?

You won’t need to. We manage every site we build, so you send us the change and we make it, usually within two business days. Changes to your copy, images and prices are part of Care. New sections and pages are quoted as extras.

That’s a deliberate choice. Most business owners don’t want to learn a website editor, and those who do often find that small edits slowly break a carefully designed layout. With Care, your hosting, support and changes are handled for a fixed monthly fee, starting at A$250 a month with a 12-month minimum, so your site keeps looking the way it did on launch day.

Is there a catch?

Astro isn’t right for everything. An online store with thousands of products, member logins or a custom web app needs different tools. We can build those as optional extras, on their own timeline, after your site is live.

It’s also true that you’re relying on a web team for changes rather than editing pages yourself at midnight. For most service businesses that’s a relief rather than a drawback, but it’s worth knowing before you choose.

For service businesses that win work through content, trust and search, it’s the best foundation we know.

Frequently asked questions

Is Astro good for SEO?

Yes, it is. Astro produces fast, clean pages that search engines can read easily, which gives your content a strong technical foundation. You still need useful content and good reviews to rank well, but the platform won’t hold you back.

What happens to my site if I stop working with you?

Your site is standard code built on an open-source tool, so it isn’t locked to us. Our Transfer service hands the whole site over, and any competent developer can host and maintain it from there.

Will I notice a difference if I move from WordPress to Astro?

Most people notice the speed straight away, especially on their phone. You’ll also stop receiving update reminders and plugin warnings, because there’s nothing of that kind to maintain.

Can an Astro site include booking forms and other tools?

Yes, it can. Booking systems, contact forms, maps and newsletter sign-ups can all be added, and they only load on the pages that use them.

Ready to put this into practice?

Everything in these guides is built into how we work, so you don’t have to manage any of it yourself. The brief takes about 15 minutes.
